Gorkha has a special history of its own, for this is the place where the unifier of Nepal, King Prithvi Narayan Shah set out to conquer a feudal kingdom that was seeped in serfdom. However, Gorkha is especially well known for the once-upon-a-time restricted Tsum Valley area that is considered to be a holy Himalayan pilgrimage valley geographically perched in northern Gorkha district of Nepal. 'Tsum' is a derivation from the Tibetan word 'Tsombo', which means ‘vivid’. Stories of yore say that Tsum valley was actually a distinct geographical area called 'Tsum Tso Chucksums', which means ‘thirteen provinces ruled as a single territory’. Whatever be the history of this ancient valley, we enjoy & experience the wonderful festivals of Lhosar, Dhachyhang, Saka Dawa & Fanning among a host of other ancient festivities celebrated hereabouts.
The Valley is well protected by three high passes- the Ngula Dhoj Hyang (5093m) to the west and Yamdro Pass (5326m) to the north. As we walk the trails, we come across areas speckled with creative chortens lined with mani walls & carved with artworks of deities inscribed with prayers that seem to be odes to the gods for departed souls of loved ones. The local folks are of Tibetan lineage and practice the ancient Bon religion. As you enter The Upper Tsum valley (a part of the Inner Himalaya) which starts from Chhokangparo, the congenial local folks (a Tibetan group of the "Tsombo") welcome you with traditional Tibetan Chiya (butter tea) and a local meal cooked in a natural hearth that’s cosy to be around, especially in the winters. This Valley is tremendously rich in cultural possessions & some lucrative deals are sometimes struck up here with the local folks by impressed trekkers looking for a memento to take home.
The trip begins at Arughat and the trail goes by the meandering Budi Gandaki River until it reaches the first higher levels of Tsum Valley with superb vistas of the Ganesh Himal and other surrounding peaks. The holy valley conserves the steps of the great Buddhist Yogi Chyuchin Milarepa and the story about Guru Padmasambhava circumbulation is sometimes told late into the nights. The local folks hereabouts are known to never ever slaughter animals, even if it’s for appeasing the gods. And the gods seem to appreciate this act as the fauna are found full & plenty in this region. This quiet but otherwise stunning Valley is surrounded by the Buddha Himal and Himal Chuli to the west, Ganesh Himal to the south, and Sringi Himal to the North…seemingly protecting this peaceful valley from the penetrable powers of evil.
