About Trip

The name ‘Island Peak’ may sound a bit off-track for a mountain in a landlocked country like Nepal but its namesake was given by one of Nepal’s early explorers Eric Shipton in 1952 who presumed the peak to be standing in a huge sea of ice. However, the local Sherpa people call the peak ‘Imja Tse’ in the local jargon. The Adventure Club has shaped your itinerary for the EBC Island Peak Climb in ways that ensure that you get appropriate acclimatization & rest at the right places before you head up to the peak so that you get the best of your climb at levels that thoroughly suit your body needs to enjoy the fantastic views that literally surround you from all around the peak.

After exploring historical Kathmandu & its ancient Heritage sites for a day, we get geared for our trip the next day by checking out all our equipment & making doubly sure that we have all that we need to hit the long & winding road to Island Peak. Our sojourn begins with a scenic flight that’s almost like an air tour to Hillary’s Lukla…the start point of our venture into the grand wild. After getting our real first views of the mountains, albeit, from the windows of our STOL plane, we now get set to walk these huge mountains through a steep ascent of Namche Bazaar, the commercial capital of the Khumbu, from where the sights of the mountains are just dazzling. We get to see the towering peaks of Thamserku & Kusum Kanguru which gives us a real high. On entering this bustling high altitude hub for bypassing trekkers; we haul up here for our first day of acclimatization by doing some good steep hiking to explore this little town & its surrounding areas. This gets our body accustomed to the higher elevations we go through in the days ahead.

Our ascension goes through colorful teeming Sherpa villages with rich traditions till our hiking takes us above the tree-lines into desolate terrain that is normal at such altitudes but it’s a wonderful display of silver-grey rocks, ice & tall peaks that seem to reach the clouds. We slowly get to Everest BC, then Kalapathar at {5545m} where we see Mt. Everest real close up & clamber on to Kongma La that looks overpowered by the massive face of Lhotse at Wuthering Heights. By now our bodies have gone used to high altitudes & we are primed for the final climb to Island Peak as our skilled Sherpa guides watch us carefully while guiding us all the way.

Sometimes it may take a day or two to scale the peak due to tough weather conditions; for some climbers, it takes a whole day of climbing activity. Some climbers prefer alpine style camping at higher camps which brings out the spirit of adventure but this also helps in making a safe ascent…we’ve finally successfully peaked at the summit of Island Peak!!! Take our pictures & trot back to Namche at a truly leisurely pace, rest a night before we head down to Lukla to hop our flight back to Kathmandu.

Peaks & high passes, prayer wheels that talk to the gods to be; and warm congenial people make this an expedition that remains locked in the heart for a really long time to come. If you are looking for long trip to Island Peak then go for ADVENTURE CLUB’S 25 days Everest High passes including our Island Peak wild Adventure package which is a fantastic option OR if you are on budgeted time, take our shorter trip which is only 17 days for our high & wild Island Peak Adventure; any option you take is a trip worth the while for years to come.

Trip Note

Flight Delays …A possibility to keep In Mind When Planning

For treks that start in Lukla, we normally book flights between Kathmandu (KTM) and Lukla (LUK) on Twin Otter planes. While flight service between the two airports is fairly reliable, at times the flight schedule can be disturbed and flights cancelled because of weather or mechanical problems.  If this happens after your trek and you would miss your international flight out of Kathmandu, Adventure Club Trek can charter a helicopter on your behalf and at your expense, so that you do not miss your international flight.

We accept US cash, travelers' checks, and credit cards (Visa and Master Card only). Upon payment to our Kathmandu office we will provide you with a receipt, which you can use to receive reimbursement if you have a travel insurance policy.  Depending upon the number of passengers, a helicopter flight will cost at least US$500, and up to US$3,500.

NOTE: Your safety is of the utmost concern whilst you are travelling with Adventure Club Trek. We will make every effort possible to follow the original itinerary but we reserve the right to change that itinerary if a segment of it becomes a safety issue. Certain mountain regions are remote, natural disasters can happen, weather conditions can decline and there can be illness or an injury. To avoid dangerous situations we may occasionally have to make changes to the itinerary to ensure everyone’s safety. That having been said, Adventure Club Trek will strive to provide you with the best possible trekking experience and to keep your safety our number one priority. In case, the flight delay/cancellation happens at the start of trip and it goes so long that it disturbs your onward travel schedule, you are free to choose an alternative trip: such a trek in the Annapurna, Langtang, or any other regions.

Pre-Trip Meeting

Prior to all the treks and expeditions, Adventure Club Trek hosts a pre-trip meeting in Kathmandu. The primary purpose of meeting is to provide an opportunity for individuals to ask questions about the forthcoming trek and to introduce other team members. The meeting covers topics as diverse as personal equipment and acclimatization and usually involves a hike and some skills training. Pre-trip meeting is very important in order to have a better preparation of the trekking.
