This eight-day adventure begins in bustling Kathmandu, home to astonishing UNESCO World Heritage sites such as colorful Durbar Square, Pashupatinath, Swayambhunath (the "Monkey Temple"), and Buddhanath (the world's largest Buddhist shrine). Our adventure continues in nearby Patan and Bhaktapur, enabling us to experience more such historic places gathered near one another, such as can not be found anywhere else on Planet Earth. A side trip to nearby Nagarkot (elevation 2195m/7201 ft.) will provide unforgettable views of a Himalayan sunset and sunrise. Then the fun will really begin, as we fly to Nepalgunj, followed by a drive of two hours to reach Bardia National Park, the largest and most undisturbed national park in Nepal. Here we will see many species of wildlife, such as elephants and rhinos, in their natural jungle habitat, while enjoying such activities as an elephant safari, a river raft trip, a nature walk, and bird-watching.
Nepal is home to many different ethnic groups, offering a fascinating tapestry of cultures, traditions and language. Within Bardia National Park we encounter one of these groups, the colorful Tharu, who themselves say that they are a people of the forest. Living in relative isolation, their culture developed without influence from the more mountainous regions of Nepal or from nearby India. Enriched by some of Nepal's most thrilling sites and unique experiences, we then return to Kathmandu for our homeward flights.
